Dutch Apple Bread Pudding with Caramel Sauce (Mary M.'s recipe)

For the pudding:

For the caramel sauce:

  • 1 stick butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • pinch salt (optional)

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease 9 x 13 inch baking dish with cooking spray. Cut apple bread into 1-inch chunks (the maple frosting on top makes for added deliciousness!). Place in greased 9 x 13 inch baking dish. Beat or whisk eggs, sugar, cream, vanilla, and salt until well combined. Pour over chunks of bread and let soak 10-15 minutes. Place baking dish on a baking sheet with at least 1 1/2 inch sides and place in oven. Pour boiling water on baking sheet to create water bath (approx. 3/4 inch of water). Bake bread pudding for 50-60 minutes or until knife inserted in center comes out clean. For a slightly browned top, take bread pudding out of water bath and bake a last 5-10 minutes. Watch carefully and check for doneness!

Make caramel sauce:

Melt 1 stick of butter with brown sugar and cream in saucepan over medium heat. Bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer 5 minutes. Add vanilla. Add pinch of salt if desired.

Pour caramel sauce over warm bread pudding.

Serve and enjoy!
